Overview of Urban Exploring:
Participants will learn about the history and purpose of urban exploring photography, including its focus on abandoned or neglected urban spaces.
Ethics and safety:
Participants will learn about the importance of ethical and responsible urban exploring, including obtaining permission when necessary and ensuring personal safety.
Planning an Urban Exploring Shoot:
Participants will learn how to research and scout urban exploring locations considering factors such as accessibility, safety, and photographic potential.
Gear Preparation:
Participants will learn about the essential gear for urban exploring photography, including cameras, lenses, tripods, and lighting equipment.
Safety Precautions:
Participants will learn how to stay safe while exploring abandoned buildings and urban areas, including wearing appropriate clothing and footwear and being aware of potential hazards.
Composition and Storytelling:
Participants will learn how to compose compelling urban exploring photographs, using techniques such as leading lines, framing, and symmetry.
Capturing the Narrative:
Participants will learn how to tell stories through their urban exploring photographs, highlighting the history and atmosphere of the locations they visit.
Incorporating Models:
Participants will learn how to incorporate models into their urban exploring photographs to add scale, context, and human interest.
Lighting and Exposure:
Participants will learn how to use natural light to their advantage in urban exploring photography, including techniques for working with diffused light and harsh shadows.
Artificial Lighting:
Participants will learn how to use artificial lighting sources, such as flashlights or portable strobes, to illuminate dark spaces and create dramatic effects.
Exposure Control:
Participants will learn how to adjust exposure settings for challenging lighting conditions encountered during urban exploring, including high contrast and low light situations.
Hands-on Practice:
Participants will have the opportunity to explore selected urban locations in Gary, Indiana, and practice urban exploring photography techniques with professional models provided by the workshop organizers.
The Introduction to URBEX Photography workshop is taught by professional photographer Ed Sochacki. Each goup class is 4 hours in length, and limited to a maximim of 6 photographers.
